Trishuli 3A Project Upgradation : Private sector questions on government's decision making

Kathmandu, June 13 (CNS) -- Nepali private sector questioned on government's decision making capacity after the latter's two controversial decisions on the Trishuli 3A hydropower project upgradation, within a fortnight.

The decision of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) board meeting on June 12 to revoke its earlier decision of May 31 to upgrade the capacity of Trishuli 3A from 60 MW to 90 MW has shown the inefficiency of government's decision making process, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has said on Thursday.

As the NEA has withdrawn its earlier decision following undue pressure from trade unions, it has exposed the unsteadiness in infrastructural development policy of government, Pashupati Murarka, vice president of FNCCI said.

Government's backtracking on its own decision regarding the national priority hydropower project will give negative message to the neighbours, donor's community and also the investors all around the world, , reads the press release published by FNCCI.

FNCCI has demanded a scientific study to assess the economic viability of of the upgrading.

On May 31, NEA board meeting headed by Minister for Energy, Umakanta Jha, had reviewed the agreement signed with China Gezhouba Group Company to construct the hydropower project.

As per the revised agreement, the cost of the upgraded project was enlarged by additional 40 million US dollars whereas 42 months construction period was offered to the construction company.

The project was believed to generate additional 30 MW power in case of upgradation.
